2025 Annual Conference 

Innovative Practices in Writing Center Pedagogy

As writing centers continue to evolve, it is crucial to embrace innovative approaches that address the changing needs of students and the evolving landscape of education. We invite proposals that showcase creative strategies, technologies, and methodologies that have been successfully implemented in writing centers. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Integrating digital tools and resources in writing instruction

  • Developing new tutoring models and techniques

  • Enhancing student engagement and motivation

  • Addressing the needs of multilingual students

  • Implementing data-driven approaches to assess and improve writing center services

  • Fostering collaboration between writing centers and other departments

  • Promoting professional development for writing center staff

Session Format Options:

  • Synchronous

    • Individual session or workshop led by an individual

    • Group submission: panel, roundtable, workshop

  • Asynchronous

Submission Deadlines:

  • Proposal Format: Proposals should include a title and an abstract (250-300 words).

  • Submission Deadline: January 21, 2025 (CLOSED)

  • Submission Method: Please submit your proposals here.

  • Notification of Acceptance: Presenters will be notified of acceptance by the week of February 3, 2025.

    • We encourage submissions from writing center professionals at all career stages, including undergraduate and graduate students and early-career scholars. The SCWCA conference is an excellent opportunity to share your innovative practices, network with peers, and contribute to the advancement of writing center pedagogy.​

SCWCA is happy to announce Dr. Kim Fahle Peck as the keynote speaker for this year's conference. Dr. Peck is the Director of the Academic Success Center at York College of Pennsylvania where she oversees all tutoring and academic support programs including the Writing and Communication Studio (WCS). In the WCS she has worked to expand online support options, develop support for multimodal communication, and grow training and professional development opportunities for both peer and professional tutors. Her writing center research has focused on development and support of tutors, project-based learning partnerships, assessment, and online tutoring. She has previously served on the executive boards of the Mid-Atlantic Writing Center Association and the Global Society of Online Educators and was the 2023 Conference Chair for the Online Writing Center Association. She was also most recently one of the co-editors of Young Scholars in Writing, and works to support and promote undergraduate research.

 

Keynote Title: The Revolution is People Driven: Human Driven Innovation in the Writing Center

Description: This presentation will consider the interrelation of people and technology throughout the history of writing centers, and consider the important role people have played and will continue to play in writing center innovation amidst increasing technology proliferation.
